Iowa Premium Receives Chinese Beef Export Approval

Tama, Iowa, June 29, 2017 - Iowa Premium today announced that it has received approval to export beef to China, making it the first Iowa-based company to gain such authorization. The Iowa Premium export approval comes just weeks after China officially opened its market to American beef following a 13-year ban.

"We are excited to supply Chinese consumers with consistent, high-quality, family farm-raised, Black Angus beef products," said Jeffrey Johnson, CEO of Iowa Premium. "Iowa Premium believes China will be an excellent export partner and we look forward to building a long sustainable relationship."

"Our beef is in demand, and we have had an extraordinary amount of inquiries from interested Chinese import companies. We are confident these valuable customers will appreciate the quality and consistency of Iowa Premium's products," said Johnson.

Iowa Premium maintains strict cattle procurement guidelines. Cattle are sourced only from family farmer-feeders in Iowa and neighboring Midwest states. All cattle are under 30 months of age and have been born, raised, and finished in the United States - these are key requirements for export to China.

"We have great partners in our local cattle feeders who maintain the necessary records for compliance with polices set forth by China. In turn, our team at Iowa Premium is judiciously auditing the required food safety and traceability protocols," said Johnson.

Iowa Premium applauds Governor Branstad’s commitment to Iowa’s beef industry

As Iowa Governor Terry Branstad prepares to serve as U.S. Ambassador to China, he continues to emphasize the importance of American agriculture and a strong, open U.S.-China trade relationship. On multiple occasions, Branstad has underscored that he “feels very strongly” about opening the Chinese market to American cattle and beef producers, particularly Iowa Premium.

“I want to be able to serve beef, American beef, specifically Iowa Premium beef, at the embassy and at the ambassador’s residence,” Branstad said at a May 4 Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing.

“On behalf of the entire team at Iowa Premium, we would like to thank Governor Branstad for his commitment to growing Iowa and American agriculture, and we applaud his efforts to support the beef industry by opening up this crucial market,” states Jeffrey Johnson, CEO of Iowa Premium.  We would be honored to have Iowa Premium beef served at the American embassy in China and look forward to the opportunity in the future.”

Iowa Premium Celebrates 2 year Anniversary

Iowa Premium began operations in November of 2014 with a skeleton crew of less than 100 people. In celebration of its 2 year anniversary, Iowa Premium recently served lunch to over 750 full-time employees.

“When we started this endeavor two years ago we set the bar high – we wanted to not only produce a premium beef product but to also provide long-term opportunities for our employees, the Tama-Toledo community and Iowa’s beef industry. I’m happy to report we have accomplished this,” reports Jeffrey Johnson, Iowa Premium CEO.

The daily kill has progressed to more than 5,500 head per week. More than 900 family farm feeders have sold cattle to Iowa Premium since production started. “We have a strong employee base, great partners in our local cattle feeders, a supportive community and an expanding customer base in the U.S. and internationally. With two years under our belt we are well positioned for the future,” concludes Johnson.

Iowa Premium Family Day

Toledo Heights Park was buzzing with activity on September 24 as nearly 600 employees and their families took part in Iowa Premium’s first annual Family Day.  Families were served a picnic lunch and enjoyed carnival games, bounce houses and ice cream novelties from a local ice cream truck.

A popular feature was the dunk tank.  For a dollar donation, you had the opportunity to ‘dunk’ a member of Iowa Premium’s management team.  All proceeds were donated to the Tama County Women and Children Services. The day was capped off with prize drawings for gift cards, computer tablets, televisions and a grill.

"We have an incredible team of employees.  They are the foundation of our business.  Family Day was our opportunity to acknowledge their hard work and to show appreciation for the contribution they make to Iowa Premium.  We look for to making this an annual event.”- Jeffrey Johnson, CEO

Iowa State University Connection

Iowa Premium recently partnered with a group of graduate students from Iowa State University. The students and faculty members brought several groups of cattle to the Tama facility in order to gather data as part of their graduate study research projects. The first study focused on cattle performance and diet digestibility when sorghum silage was used as an alternative forage in feedlot diets. The object of the second study was to determine the influence of supplemental trace mineral source on trace mineral status, growth, and carcass performance in feedlot steers that were fed high sulfur diets. The ISU group worked closely with Harvey Torres, Iowa Premium grading manager. As a company, we are excited to see students engaging in research for the betterment of the cattle industry. Iowa Premium looks forward to continued partnership with ISU.
